Smart textile jacket with illuminated conductive tracks and snap fastener
Clothing of the future.

Technical textiles

Smart textiles combine fabric and electronics. Our electrically conductive snap fasteners form the interface: they connect the textile electrode on the body to the electronic module that measures and displays – and reliably transmit signals and electrical pulses.

Conductive snap fasteners for smart textiles

In smart textiles, the snap fastener does not act as a closure but as a conductive connection: between the electronic module that measures and displays, and the textile electrode that measures on the body or delivers electrical pulses.

  • Smart textiles and wearables / ESD applications
  • ECG and biosignal measurement systems
  • Contacting textile electrodes
  • Connecting sensors and electronic modules
  • Medical and sports monitoring textiles

Two types of snap fastener for smart textiles

Depending on the application, you need a snap fastener that conducts electricity – or one that deliberately contains no metal.

Brass snap fastener
Conductive

Brass snap fasteners

Here the snap fastener serves as a conductive connection between the electronic module and the electrode. Brass is a highly conductive base material. Available in nickel-free (skin-friendly) or gold-plated (oxidation-resistant contact surface) versions.

  • Conductive connection module ↔ electrode
  • For biosignals (ECG, EMG) and electrical pulses (EMS)
  • Unsnap the module – the textile stays washable
  • Snap in instead of plugging in – robust in everyday use

Plastic snap fastener
Metal-free

Plastic snap fasteners

Lightweight, metal-free and available in many colours. They are not detected as metal and are therefore increasingly used in future textiles – wherever metal is a problem.

  • No interference with X-rays, imaging and detectors
  • For patient, protective and safety clothing
  • Very light and comfortable on the skin
  • Ideal for module housings and holders

Where smart textiles are heading

Clothing and textiles are becoming an interface: they measure pulse, breathing and pressure, provide warmth at the push of a button, warn of danger and pass data on to a smartphone or clinic – from sports shirts to smart seat cushions in wheelchairs.

Snap fastener as contact to the electrode
Example

The snap fastener as contact to the electrode

  • Electrode on the skin measures body signals (e.g. ECG)
  • Conductive track in the textile leads to the snap fastener
  • Module is snapped on – contact is made
  • Stimulation (TENS/EMS): electrical pulses flow back to the electrode
  • Washing: unsnap the module, the textile stays washable

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

What material are the conductive snap fasteners made of?

Our conductive snap fasteners are made of brass and are available in two versions: nickel-free – skin-friendly for direct body contact – or gold-plated – gold does not oxidise and ensures a durable contact surface.

What role does the snap fastener play in smart textiles?

It is the conductive connection between the electronic module that measures and displays, and the textile electrode on the body. Biosignals such as ECG or EMG flow through it to the module and – during stimulation – electrical pulses flow to the electrode.

What are plastic snap fasteners suitable for?

Plastic snap fasteners are lightweight and metal-free. They are not detected as metal and are therefore suitable for clothing used in X-ray and imaging areas, at security checks and in metal-free environments.

Which machine do I need?

The T12 pneumatic machine (with pedal) is suitable for series production, the Mod. 4 AF hand screw press for samples and medium quantities. Both work with interchangeable tool sets.

How long does delivery take?

Stock items are generally delivered within 1–3 working days.

For special products and custom versions, the delivery time is usually around 2–4 weeks.

Can conductive snap fasteners be washed?

That depends on the overall construction of the textile and the electronics. We will be happy to advise you and develop the right solution together with you.

Will you support us from prototype to series production?

Yes. As a development partner, we advise you from the first sample through the prototype to series production.

How is the electronic module attached?

The module is snapped on via the conductive snap fastener – robust in everyday use, with no plug needed. Before washing it is simply unsnapped, and one module fits several garments.

In which areas are smart textiles used?

For example in health and telemedicine, in sports with muscle stimulation (EMS), in workwear and protective clothing, in care and rehab aids, and in heated and illuminated textiles.

In ESD applications, conductive connections dissipate static charge in a controlled way – important in electronics and cleanroom production.

What colours are plastic snap fasteners available in?

Plastidur plastic snap fasteners are available as standard in matt black (col. 9005) and matt white (col. 9010), with further RAL colours on request. Find out more under Plastic snap fasteners.

Which tool do I need for plastic snap fasteners?

Plastic snap fasteners have their own die set consisting of upper and lower tool – one set per series and size, for example for Plastidur 2008 and 2010. Find out more under Setting tools for snap fasteners.
